about

recently i picked up a boss gp-10. it's sold as a guitar processor/modeler but since the modeling is primarily built around the use of roland's special divided pickup, it includes a guitar synth engine. actually, it includes three of them. one isn't particularly impressive, the second doesn't really track very well and is basically just a two oscillator polysynth with pretty limited tonal capabilities. but the third is an emulation of roland's gr-300 guitar synth from 1980, most famously used by robert fripp of king crimson. this is also the guitar synth unit he used early on in his soundscapes setup, before being replaced in the late 90s by the roland vg-99 (which also included gr-300 emulation). naturally, i had to use it for some soundscapes.

the incredible amount of modeling features on the gp-10 are most definitely going to become an important part of my setup from here on out, such as its ability to completely retune your guitar to whatever you feel like or even change to an entirely different guitar (i have a couple patches so far that are just completely dry telecaster and ES-335 models for use with my amp sims, as well as a "9 string" setup and even a fender bass vi). all of it is really really neat and super useful. but the gr-300 emulation is easily the most important part of it for me specifically, seeing as that's a sound i've been chasing for, what, a year and a half now?

this is *not* the first soundscape i've done with it, but it's the first one that actually like, sounded good. the first few scapes were tests, experimenting with a handful of patches that i've since replaced. this one was also technically a test but i still really enjoyed doing it and it ended up really speaking to me. it spoke to me enough that i ended up mastering it, throwing together artwork, and releasing it as a single within half an hour of performing it.

i know i don't normally do singles, but this felt significant enough to release by itself. it's almost a realization of the sound i've spent the last year and a half chasing. all that's left is to figure out how to make more than just pretty string sounds with it. that'll be the next challenge.

i would also encourage you to spend a buck or two on it if you can, but since this was kind of spur of the moment i figured i may as well just put it up for free.
