about

i feel like this is probably a fairly open secret but i've never been particularly proud of leviathan. i thought the material was good if a bit wanky and fillery. but i've always been fairly open about how much i hate the sound. it's very much not a good sounding album.

or at least that's how i used to feel. but not anymore. i've gone back in and carefully remastered the entire album from start to finish. overall it sounds a *lot* better now. there's still some things i wish i could go back to the original mixes and tweak, but i don't think that's gonna be doable any time soon. for only having access to the final mixes, i like what i've been able to do with the album.

not only has it been sonically improved, it's also been improved structurally. something i thought was cool 5 years ago was to like. have everything running together over the course of each disc, with each song segueing into the next, only pausing between discs. i've since realized that this was an awful idea, and that sometimes a little room to breathe is good. so instead of structuring the album as two continuous hour long programs, it's instead been divided into roughly 20 minute sides of vinyl. this also makes it a little more conducive to listening across multiple sessions, something the original wasn't very good at.

for the most part aside from the new side breaks the album runs just about the same as the original. since i couldn't just export everything from REAPER as is and import it into logic, i had to reconstruct all of the track placements by hand, as well as find new places to split tracks. this means some of the songs might be longer or shorter than you remember. nothing has been done to the actual mixes though, they just might come in a few frames earlier or later than before. the only major changes to the way the album runs are a few segues that i thought could have been done better, namely removing some fadeouts or crossfades in favor of letting those songs play out.

i've not gone in and george lucas'd the album, it's not unrecognizable from the original. it's still leviathan, it's still 98% the same album. tracks were timed down to individual frames to make sure i got it as close as i possibly could. it's just a more improved leviathan. it sounds so much better. the guitars are actually audible now instead of being drowned out by drums across most of the album. there's actual midrange frequencies now. it's not a shrill, treble heavy mess. it's still not perfect but it's a hell of a lot better than it was in 2016.

i've also included a number of bonus tracks taken from the album's sessions. some of them are work in progress versions of songs that i found i still had, some are songs that didn't make the cut or otherwise had to be scrapped, some are extended versions of songs that were cut down for the album, and there's a few demo versions of songs scattered around as well. i hope that's enough to justify the price of this release, but for those who don't want the bonus tracks, there's also a more barebones release with just the remastered album for a few bucks cheaper.

i hope those of you who've heard the original appreciate the work that went into this and can appreciate the album even more now, and i hope those of you who *haven't* heard it yet are able to give it a listen and enjoy it <3
