volume 1 of soundscapes, by lauren "robin" straily
this is the first collection in a new series called soundscapes. each release in this series will consist of soundscape recordings by myself.
soundscapes is a technique pioneered by robert fripp in the 90s as an evolution of his frippertronics technique. instead of a guitar, a fuzz pedal, and two revox reel to reel tape machines, he equipped himself with a complete guitar synth setup (notably using his old roland GR-300 even into the 2000s), a number of effects racks, and two tc electronic 2290 rackmount delay units. these gave him the ability to expand the roughly 4 second delays granted by the dual revoxes outwards to a minute (or more!) of looping time. the amount of sonic possibilities granted by this setup was practically infinite, only limited by the user's imagination (and sound design skills).
here i have not properly duplicated this setup. these are my initial attempts at performing soundscapes, recorded throughout march of 2019. at the time i did not have access to any sort of guitar synth setup so most of the pitch related processing is done via, well, pitch shifting pedals (your standard octave up or down, i think there's some harmonized stuff at octaves and fifths as well?). i also did not have access to what i have since learned is the *true* key ingredient to this setup, the eventide H3000 ultra harmonizer. while the minute-plus delay times are of course essential to achieving the soundscapes aesthetic, the range of processing options allowed by the H3000 are the true star of the show, especially when combined with the guitar synth's tone shaping abilities. instead most of these scapes are simply performed on guitar thru a handful of pitch shifters, some chorus units, and some delays before hitting the loopers.
overall while i have certainly surpassed this both in terms of performance, note choice, and accuracy to robert's original 90s setup, this collection of soundscapes is still integral i feel to showcasing the development of my own soundscapes technique over the past year. i hope you all enjoy <3
