I have had the original LSDj file for this piece since, I wanna say 2013? It's gone through a couple revisions since then, and longtime fans will know it's on my personal Soundcloud in an alternate form. I much prefer the original solo to the one presented here, but I couldn't salvage it since I lost the original multitracks. Oh well, at least the actual Gameboy sounds better. On the original I used a Gameboy Color, since that's all I had. I recorded each track individually and added some reverb, as well as heavy EQ on the WAV channel to increase the low end. This time around though, since I've learned a lot about LSDj since then, and since I finally have a DMG Gameboy (the original grey brick model), I got a decent mix on the actual console and just recorded it all in one pass. There's a touch of reverb on it and a tiny bit of boosting on the low end, but otherwise there's very minimal processing, even on the master buss.

I'm not a fan of radically altering chip sounds in the mix, I prefer to try and capture the Gameboy's natural sound and make only tiny changes to it. Maybe boost a couple frequencies a tiny bit or cut a few problem frequencies just enough. Unlike in a regular mix, where I have tons of instruments all fighting for the same space, with a Gameboy I have 4 different sounds each with their own space that all fit together just perfectly (as long as you get your volume levels right). Occasionally there may be a few problem frequencies if you try and mix it in with other instruments, but otherwise, it doesn't need much, and if you really have to go crazy with the EQ, there's probably something wrong with the source.
